Strengthening CMD prevention and care capacity by improving the quality of Nursing Education
Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) constitute a global health challenge with severe social and economic consequences, particularly affecting vulnerable populations and straining healthcare systems in underserved regions.
Nursing for the future is an international partnership project aimed at collaboratively strengthening the educational landscape of nurses in India, Kenya, and Denmark. The project has four main objectives.
-
Objective 1: Cardiometabolic disease (CMD)
The objective is to strengthen the quality of nursing education in CMD prevention and care by:
- Enhancing access to quality nursing education on CMDs in Kenya, India, and Denmark.
- Co-developing evidence-based learning activities and learning resources to be implemented in the nursing education.
The aim is to improve access to high-quality nursing education on CMDs in partner countries. In collaboration with partners from India, Kenya, and Denmark, we co-develop courses with partners on CMD prevention, management, treatment, comorbidities, and patient education. The collaboration is organised in working groups, where we conduct workshops, webinars and training sessions to share teaching methods, insights, and research.
Key outcomes
- 1.1 Co-developed CMD Courses: Design culturally tailored CMD courses for pre-service nursing programs with partners in India, Kenya, and Denmark.
- 1.2 Capacity Building: Enhance faculty and student skills using train-the-trainer and health learning design models for sustainable outreach.
- 1.3 International Student Exchange: Facilitate intercultural learning and networking through exchange programs between India, Kenya and Denmark.
- 1.4 Evaluation: Conduct mixed-method evaluations of educational programs and international co-education initiatives.

Objective 2: Clinical decision-making and clinical leadership
The objective is to empower nurses in clinical decision-making and clinical leadership within community health care settings and:
-
Enhance access to knowledge and skills and support nursing students to become reflective practitioners
-
Through targeted training, strengthen the professional identity of nurses.
The aim is to empower nurses to act autonomously in clinical practice, especially in underserved rural areas and particularly within CMD prevention and care as this is a major threat to public health. To achieve this, a framework will be co-developed.
Key Outcomes
2.1 Reflective Nurse Practitioners: Faculty and clinical educators will design and deliver education that enables nursing students to become reflective practitioners, applying systematic approaches to clinical decision-making and clinical leadership. This will be developed through seminars, a train-the-trainer model, and an integrated in-class/out-of-class model in collaboration with partners in India, Kenya, and Denmark.
2.2 Nurses have access to CMD knowledge: Nurse-led clinics gain CMD ressources, research, and networks via seminars and professional collaboration. Activities will include designing and delivering a series of seminars.
2.3 Learning, impact, and evaluation: Mixed-method assessments (surveys, interviews, observations) to measure impact and alignment with outcomes.

Objective 3: Pedagogy
The objective is to expand and improve pedagogical teaching methods. We will strengthen the nursing education by expanding and improving pedagogical approaches—online, blended learning (OBL) and simulation—through targeted competency development for teachers. This includes:
-
To develop and run competency development for teachers in the nursing education employing pedagogical approaches within online blended learning strategies in-class, out-of-class and in simulation.
-
An expansion of the teacher competencies enables them to plan, develop, and execute teaching both in faculty and online education.
Key outcomes
- 3.1 Building Faculty Capacity: Teachers will gain the skills to deliver high-quality, accessible nursing education using innovative online and simulation strategies. Cross-country working groups will design tailored development plans, guided by the Health Design Learning Model.
- 3.2 Mentorship and Outreach: A cascade model will create a mentorship corps that reaches 23 underserved areas. Annual training sessions in each partner country will equip teachers with OBL and simulation expertise, enabling them to mentor less experienced colleagues.
- 3.3 Measuring Impact: Conduct evaluation activities and outcomes using mixed methods, focusing on teacher experiences and their ability to apply OBL effectively.

Objective 4: Partnerships and knowledge networks
This objective is to create new partnerships, establish knowledge cycles, and provide opportunities for networking and exchange of staff and students. This includes:
-
Participating in networks and partnerships for new knowledge and research in nursing education
-
Establishing exchange programs across countries for students and faculty members in nursing education
